Born in Milan in 1918, his father was the acclaimed sculptor Giannino, who was particularly active in the period between the two world wars and would influence Castiglioni’s “plastic” approach to design. “I always start with an idea, which I then modify and perfect when I construct it. There’s a lot of modelling in my work, which is partly due to the fact that I’ve always seen my father working with his hands and shaping material in order to gradually give it the desired shape”, Castiglioni explains.
